The Well Summit

Greetings Loved Ones,

I spent Friday and most of today at the Well Summit in Greenpoint Brooklyn. I got the tickets rather impulsively, thinking it would be smart to invest in spending more time with like-minded people and especially people I could learn from. When I arrived, I tooled around the space and looked at the vendors they had set up near the entrance. The brands represented were pretty cool! From vegan ice-cream to organic face oils / makeup, to a book stand (my fave). At the book stand, I asked if they carried ‘Energy Medicine’ by Jill Blakeway...and a girl next to me perked up and said, '“OMG, I love that book!” We ended up connecting on so many levels and spent the two days as summit buddies.

What impressed me most was the diversity of women! We had a beautifully mixed audience. Although, there were literally no men...none. The wellness industry is absolutely female-driven, and I think (hopefully) we all realized that we need to open it up to men more and target men in wellness marketing.

Before I share my criticisms with you, here are a few notes I took:

  • Surround yourself with people who remind you of who you really are.

  • Consistency and persistence are critical to your success.

  • Focus on your zone of genius and spend time with people who are experts in what you don’t know.

  • What do you need to let go of to be where you want to be?

  • Pay attention to how your mind and body are responding to a situation. That will tell you everything.

  • On aging well:

    • Increase strength training - women hit peak bone density at age 30

    • Eat more fruits, veggies (of course) and high-fiber foods

    • Get more sleep

So, there were some good reminders. However, there was a little yin to the yang of this summit...I’ve got to say, the sound system could have been so much better. The panelists were great, and trying their best - but the microphones literally didn’t work half the time, and when they did it still wasn’t loud enough. That alone was enough to make me regret buying a ticket. You could also hear all the noise from the vendors in the adjacent space (separated only by a curtain). I feel the need to write about the cons, because I had a much higher expectation going into this experience based on other articles I’d read beforehand.

While I took some good notes and got inspired by certain founders, I found myself wishing for more depth…more lessons. I really didn’t have any ‘aha moments’. Today, I actually left halfway through because I knew I could make better use of my time elsewhere.

To end this on more of a positive note :) I made a great new friend, was inspired to go further with my writing and the Lifted podcast, and I was especially reminded of how important it is for us to be more inclusive. The wellness world tends to be very whitewashed, and it was awesome (and so important) to see so many women of color on stage with such unique stories. And at the end of the day, this summit brought so many bright and powerful people together in the same room…for that I am grateful.

Love, Helen Denham
