Today I Noticed

I’ve been learning more about creative writing, and today’s prompt was simple: write for five to ten minutes on the topic ‘Today I Noticed’. It’s a great practice for self-reflection, and a great way to clear out writer’s block.

Today I noticed how happy it made me to take a quiet walk without my phone. Just me and my coffee...peeking into the glowing homes on Third Avenue, with their charming christmas lights winking at me through the windows. I noticed how much my body loves to move...to run..to inhale crisp evening air. As I looked down at my new shoes, I noticed that I’ve been spending recklessly - thinking that more things will make me happier. I guess I needed to prove the opposite to myself.

I noticed how much the small interactions matter - the inflection of a “thank you” or eye contact with a stranger. Or the stolen moment to snuggle a friendly dog, or smile at a toddler throwing a tantrum.

I noticed how much better I feel when I eat olives, meats and cheeses during my cycle. Furthermore, how my body signals exactly what it needs with a craving or an ache. I acknowledged my body as a home to be looked after with care, not pacified.

I noticed that I’ve been entertaining myself with reality television which is out of character…and how much happier I am when I watch something educational and inspirational. I noticed that Netflix is designed to be addictive, and that ‘sheeple’ get created this way.

I noticed that friends who are critical (and not in a constructive way) are kind of like partners who gaslight us. Perhaps not true friends in the end. I noticed that I’ve gotten better about calling people out for being unkind., while also being quick to compliment when they do something admirable. I am more honest now.

I noticed how lucky I am to have such a tight family. We all communicate daily, and my family brings so much laughter and light to my life. I noticed that not everyone gets to experience this, and I don’t take it for granted. I also noticed that I could stand to be more forgiving…to open my heart up even more.
